Amidst the high velocity chases around Alderney, I had the most fun winding up a nightstick and waiting for another racer to get close enough to bop over the head. I attribute it to one crucial factor: it revives the melee combat of EA's classic motorcycle racer. Of the multiplayer modes I tried out, The Lost & Damned's race mode feels most unique to the new content on this downloadable pack. Sterling's take: Road Rash is the most important name here. Using a combination of light and heavy melee attacks, you can make the others eat the road and then cruise on to victory. Race Mode Rockstar says: This "road rash" style race involves up to 16 bikers, duking it out to come in first.and not get splattered on the pavement. Again, not a dramatic departure from the material you can play online right now, but it's got a few variations on the familiar formula. The best part is that you get more AI as you gain more turf. If you're invading enemy territory, you'll have to cut through layers of computer-controlled gunmen mixed with online players. Instead of playing on a map with you and a handful of human players, "Own the City" gives you more to do by throwing AI-controlled characters onto the playing field. Sterling's take: It's "Turf War" with a little something extra. Defenders can be upgraded by jacking a strategically placed "Gun Van" and driving it near your teammates for some fresh weapons. Territory is won by taking out any rivals in the area, including AI-controlled defenders for your rival team. Own the City Mode Rockstar says: This mode has one side play as the Lost and the other, The Angels of Death as they speed around the city trying to take over territory. If you've played any team-based GTA4 modes online, this won't feel too alien to you. I died, but it helps my teammates get the last kill. Fortunately, it wasn't in vain, since I crossed paths with the bus and managed to destroy my car just enough to create a flaming roadblock. Perhaps it was the size and scale of the maps, but during a few spawns, I found myself wandering around trying to find the bus and/or my comrades. Conversely, as the bus driver, you must hit specific checkpoints in order to safely drop off all of the witnesses.

Sterling's take: "Witness Protection" is a cat-and-mouse game that's not too dissimilar from the likes of "Cops & Crooks." It's a co-op mode in which you work with your biker pack to pick off a bus full of snitches before they can reach a police station. Witness Protection Mode Rockstar says: The N.O.O.S.E must deliver 3 state's witnesses to their corresponding police stations via armored bus The Lost are out to stop them by any means necessary. Don't assume that it's a copy/paste job, though there are some intriguing twists on last spring's offerings. The results so far? Of the modes I played, most weren't too dissimilar from the original game's. I visited Rockstar's San Francisco facility last week for a sample of what The Lost and Damned, the new DLC pack, will offer for multiplayer. Several months after millions of gamers finished Niko Bellic's dysfunctional misadventures in Liberty City, the promise of new content is close enough to taste. One of the best reasons to pick up the 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV has been the promise of exclusive downloadable episodes.
